What are the safety protocols at the hotel?

While no one knows if Covid-19 will still be a concern in May 2021, rest assured that the hotel has safety and sanitation protocols already in practice. For specific details please see the hotel’s website.

Will I have to wear a mask?

This will be determined at the time of the event based on the current protocol practices and city/county mandates. As a precaution, The Quilt Rambler has made arrangements to provide each student with their own 6’ x 18” table for their sewing pleasure, with the hopes that the wearing of a mask will be optional. Time will tell.


Is a hotel stay required? I live nearby and would like to commute.

Recognizing that some of our local guests have family obligations (such as a caregiver for others) that necessitates the desire to be home in the evenings, the hotel stay is greatly encouraged but not required. That said, The Quilt Rambler does have a contract for a minimum number of guestrooms in addition to the rental cost of the facilities and would sincerely encourage everyone to take advantage of the Hilton’s hospitality. By staying at the hotel, you have extended hours for classroom sewing, opportunities to enjoy evening activities with others, not to mention you don’t have to make your bed or cook! We sincerely hope you will consider staying on location making this a true destination quilting retreat.

Hotel Registration

What if I am looking for a roommate to share hotel expenses?

That’s wonderful! Many quilting friendships are formed at Land Locked Quilting Cruise™ events! Please let your request be made known at registration and we will do our best to play quilter roomie matchmaker.

Are meals included?

Included in the Land Locked Quilting Cruise™ fee is a Welcome Reception (light foods) Wednesday night, catered luncheons on Thursday and Friday, with a boxed lunch on Saturday. There are excellent dining opportunities for the evening meal both at the hotel restaurant and within driving distance of the hotel. A list of recommendations will be provided at check-in/registration.  For those choosing to stay in the guestrooms at the hotel, your room rate includes a hot breakfast voucher for the hotel’s restaurant for up to two people based on double occupancy. Additional guests in the room may purchase a voucher for $12 per person.

I’m attending with friends, will we be able to sit near each other?

Yes!  For this reason, there will be assigned seating arrangements in the classroom to do our best to accommodate these requests. Rest assured, whether coming by yourself or in a group, you will more than likely go home with new friendships made!

Do I need to bring a sewing machine?

Yes, along with general sewing supplies. These items will be listed on a supply list emailed 60 days prior to the event. For those guests flying into the Houston area, The Quilt Rambler has a limited number of Janome travel sewing machines (the same ones used in our in-studio Land Locked Quilting Cruise™ events) available for rental during the event. Please inquire at the time of registration. First come, first served.

What about electricity?

We hear you! This is a common issue when attending a class, workshop, or retreat. No problem, The Quilt Rambler will be providing all electrical power strips to allow you to plug in your machine, personal table light We will also have charging stations available to charge your phone or tablet (bring your own cord). We’ve got you covered, one less thing to pack!

 Do I need to bring an iron?

The classroom will have ironing stations set up around the room, with a minimum of one iron per five students. You are welcomed to bring a travel iron for use at your station, subject to approval by the hotel’s electrician at the time of the event as overall power use will be evaluated.

What about cutting mats, rotary cutters, sharp objects?

This is the beauty of a Land Locked Quilting Cruise™ – no sharp object restrictions! Unless you are flying perhaps. No worries as there will be cutting stations around the classroom with cutting mats and rotary cutters for your convenience. But please, do bring your rotary cutter if possible!

Do I need to purchase the patterns, fabric kits, or tools?


Patterns for all three quilts are complimentary as part of your welcome packet provided at check-in. Fabric kits are optional. The advantage is they will have the pattern’s featured fabrics already precut and ready to sew. 





You are welcomed to bring your own fabrics provided they are precut to allow maximum sewing time. A fabric cutting supply list will be emailed upon request no later than 60 days prior to the event.


The quilts being taught are all companion patterns for Studio 180 Design tools and yes, the tools are required. We encourage you to order any tools you don’t already own directly from The Quilt Rambler’s website; these will be shipped to you at the time of order, so you don’t have to wait!

Any product ordered less than 2 weeks prior to the event will be available to pick up at check-in.

What time does the event begin?

Check-in is between the hours of 3 PM and 5 PM on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, outside the Atlantis Ballroom. During this time, you will receive your welcome packet, name badge, any fabric kits ordered, and your sewing station assignment. Take this time to set up your sewing station then check into the hotel any time after 4 PM.  Our welcome reception will follow at 6 PM with light finger foods and get-acquainted activities. The classroom will close at 9 PM that evening. Delayed by flight or travel? Have the front desk contact us and we will make sure you have time to set up your machine prior to class instruction on Thursday morning.

What time does classroom instruction begin?

Daily instruction with Karen will be from 9 AM to 5 PM with an hour lunch break, the exception is the final day, we will end at 4 PM to allow time to pack up.

What about “around the clock sewing”?

The hotel has generously agreed to unlimited access to our classroom. While the agenda says “midnight” this is negotiable and will be determined on a daily basis. Bottom line – you can sew to your little heart’s content!

What are the on-site pop-up store hours?

Our event staff will be able to assist you during class instruction hours. Our pop-up shop will include notions, tools, fabrics, and other patterns by The Quilt Rambler. Charge Card, Checks, or Cash are accepted. The last call for store items will be Saturday at 4 PM.

What time is the event over?

We will begin packing up our sewing stations at 4 PM on Saturday, May 15, 2021, with all personal belongings removed from the classroom by 5 PM.  Not ready for the fun to end? Extend your hotel stay through Sunday morning!
