1 + 1 = 3

When does one plus one equal three? No, this is not “new math.”  Sometimes one week leads to another and then another until I noticed it’s been three weeks since I’ve blogged…but that’s not the answer to the riddle either!

It’s like an algebra question, you have to wrap your brain around it and get a little creative in substituting x and y to come up with the answer.

1 (mommy) + 1 (daddy) = 3 (baby)

See! One plus one equals a family of three!

Three Boppy Covers

Okay, so maybe I’ve got a little first-time grandmother brain fog! But if you’ve been there, then you certainly understand! As a longarm quilter, I can’t tell you how many “rush” baby quilts I have quilted for my customers. All the while thinking “you’ve known about this how long?” but of course, I’d smile and say that I’d work it in so they would have it just in time.

Well, I’ve eaten my words! How long have I known I was to be a grandmother? And why did the requested boppy covers get put off until 3 weeks before the due date!!! Sigh.

First pillow cover

Boppy pillows, for those of you not in the know, are a marketing phenomena – I mean, I wish I had invented this! They are the nicest pillows used to prop up baby while nursing or to have in one’s lap for support in holding the baby, as the baby grows they can lounge on it as in the package photo. They have available a wide assortment of cute covers to purchase, or you could make your own – especially if your claim to fame is smokin’ needle. See the cute little lama print in the background of the photo above? That was what started the whole idea as my daughter-in-love picked this print for the requested pillow cover. Well, I felt it best to “proof the pattern” with some fabric I had on hand so boppy cover number one is colorful pokie-dots.

Boppy cover two had an improvement, the zipper in the back has a flap over it to make it a tad more professional looking. This fabric was also chosen by my daughter-in-love and you will see it in some future projects for the nursery. After this testing of my pattern design for fit and functionality, I was ready to move on to the “real” fabric!

Boppy cover number 3

True confession – there’s actually a prototype between boppy cover number one and boppy cover number two. It didn’t quite go according to plan (sigh) but it is salvageable – I was able to locate more of the fabric and will “fix it” one day…

Time To Quilt

And what first-time quilting grandma wouldn’t want to make a quilt! Oh, my. It’s been on my to do list for months!!! I used to have a sign in my studio that said “I’m not behind, I’m in demand” – so that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!

Before the “official announcement,” my daugher-in-love and I went fabric shopping for black and white fat quarters to make a “tummy time quilt” for our future “Baby O”.

Finally, the day came when I was ready to pull out the fabrics and have fun! Who doesn’t love black and white quilts!

And for the record, this is the first quilt on my longarm since moving back into the studio post-Harvey reconstruction! I just happened to have some fabulous black batting from FiberCo (that I actually was able to locate in all the mess of moving) and this darling pokie-dot fleece for the back!

Tummy Time Quilt on the Longarm

Well, there’s nothing like just in time quilting! The tummy time quilt was delivered with little “Baby O” still in mommy’s tummy….but not for long! The official due date just 3 weeks away…

Mommy respectfully declined to show her face as she had been put on bed rest –  but the tummy time quilt shows how close she is to having her baby!

And Baby Makes Three

If you follow me across social media you know that we welcomed little Reagan Marie two weeks early, making her appearance October 20 instead of November 4! We are so blessed that both mommy and baby had a safe and happy delivery! Thank you for your prayers, support, and the welcoming of our newest family member.

And of course, I just have to share a photo of my sweet Reagan on her tummy time quilt made just for her by her Oma (me!)….she’s 6 days old in this photo!

More To Come

So now ya’ know what I’ve been up to the past three weeks! Catching up on personal projects, sneaking in snuggles with my sweet Reagan as much as possible, and actually doing a lot of secret sewing that I will be able to share soon! Stay tuned for a couple more blog posts this week as I wrap up my October Island Batik Ambassador challenge project, prepare for Fall Quilt Market, and this time next week will kick off a blog hop with Studio 180 Design and Island Batik with fabrics that will be revealed at market this upcoming weekend. Lots of fun things going on in The Quilt Rambler Studio!

KAREN!! How is it I don’t follow you on IG??!! I’m going to rectify that right away. Ohhhhh, little Reagan is just too sweet. Isn’t it just fabulous having a girl?!! I can’t exactly say from experience YET, but soon. I had never heard of those boppy pillows until Dominic came around. They are COOL. My list of things to make for Baby Girl are almost endless, so I can understand how you are feeling. ~smile~ Roseanne

Baby Reagan is soooo precious and beautiful!! What a blessing! Grandchildren are just THE best! I do understand that first time grandmother baby fog! LOL Her tummy time quilt and boppy covers are great. Those boppies really are wonderful. They were so helpful when the boys were born and you were trying to feed two hungry babies at the same time!! Can’t wait to see more of Baby Reagan’s journey with Oma! A sad confession on my part, I still have (most of) the cut out buggy/cart cover my daughter requested for my first grandchild. Never did get it sewn together (BIG SIGH!!!) but someone had given her a couple as a gift, so we were covered. You did well getting all that done in three weeks! Good job, Oma!!
